Ideas on how to look stylish on the day of your equine photography session
So you’ve decided to book a photography session with Pony Portrait as you have been dreaming of beautiful, professional photographs of you/your children and your family pony for a while! Now there’s the questions of ‘what do we wear?’ and by ‘we’ you mean humans and ponies… Don’t fret though, I can help – here are a few tips and pointers that I’m sure you will find helpful:
Firstly, matching your clothing to the colour of your pony is a great idea and works well. For example; above, both mother and daughter have worn white to mirror the colour of their beautiful Highland pony. The mother’s addition of tweed to her outfit provides the essential country element that shows a great sense of classic and timeless style.
In this second photograph of Anika and her Highland pony Pippa (great name!) we can see how colour co-ordinated props can also enhance a photograph. This sweet painted bench provided us with a great photo opportunity. The use of the simple white showing halter and rope also enhances the scene.
Something to consider: You may enjoy dressing your pony in matching brightly coloured accessories around the yard, but it is much better to keep things plain and simple for the photography session.
Lucinda was photographed here wearing a gorgeous flowing dress in a soft pastel pink that is a perfect combination with the cream pony’s pink features. This girl has style! Better still, this was a crisp winter’s day which provided great light for the photograph but the overall feel of the shot isn’t ‘wintery’… so don’t worry about waiting for spring or summer to book your session.
Ella chose a very pretty outfit for her portrait session - a lovely dress with pink floral-pattern on a black background. With her black pony, the fabric is the perfect complement. If the outfit had been plain black, this image could have looked a little dull and monotone; whereas the addition of the small pink flowers has lifted the image beautifully. I don’t usually recommend that young girls wear black as it can look quite harsh, but this was a brilliant compromise resulting in a lovely portfolio of images.
If you prefer to keep things casual, then simple plain colours are best. Although Tess is wearing a navy-blue jacket in the above image and pony Ben is black, because of the simplicity of the outfit, it doesn’t detract from the image at all and the grey jumper helps to pull the colours together. I also think the blue jacket reflects the blue-black highlights of this beautiful old pony’s winter coat.
I hope this insight has helped give you some ideas for when you come to plan your outfits for your very own photography session.
